More personalized medical care

Shape, March, 2008

Imagine having a doctor who never keeps you waiting. It sounds too good to be true, but it could become a reality with a "direct practice" or "concierge" physician. A growing number of M.D.'s are forgoing insurance carriers to offer VIP services. For a set membership fee--generally between $1,000 and $2,000 a year--you'll get amenities such as guaranteed same-day visits, spa-like offices, and 24-hour e-mail or telephone access.

(Most don't accept insurance, but you may be able to cover some of the fees if your plan allows you to go out of network.) To find a concierge physician near you, visit simpd.org.
