Why men don't remember emotional stuff - Your Life
Shape, April, 2003 by Ramin Ganeshram
When your boyfriend or husband says he doesn't remember the big blowout-or passionate encounter-you had last month, but you can recall every detail, don't take it to mean that he's bluffing or doesn't care. Turhan Canli, an assistant professor of psychology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, says there are biological reasons why women are more likely than men to remember emotionally charged or traumatic events.
"When we showed women and men photos depicting traumatic scenes, the women remembered more about the pictures later," says Canli of the research he conducted at Stanford University in California. "We observed nine brain regions involved in both emotional experience and memory formation in women vs. two in men." Canli's advice for coping with this difference is to "acknowledge it and move on. Men should admit they may not remember something, even if it's embarrassing to do so," he says. On the other hand, "Women shouldn't always take a man's forgetfulness as a personal slight-it could b e just a result of his biology."
