Turn over a new leaf for your heart

Shape, May, 2007

We know that dark leafy greens like spinach and romaine lettuce are packed with heart-healthy phytochemicals. Now a new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine finds that they're even better for your ticker than once thought. The reason? These veggies are high in nitrates, which help keep arteries open, increasing blood flow.

When adults were given a daily supplement that contained the same amount of nitrates found in 3 cups of raw romaine lettuce, their blood-pressure levels dropped significantly within three days. So sneak in those greens whenever possible: Try arugula in your omelet, or add some Swiss chard to your stir-fry.
