If you do one thing this month … clear your cosmetics clutter: you'll give yourself and your skin a fresh start
Shape, May, 2008
You've emptied your closet of winter clothes, but don't stop your spring cleaning there--chances are your makeup bag can use an overhaul too. "Over time, cosmetics start to accumulate bacteria left behind by your fingers and brushes," says Kenneth Mark, M.D., a dermatologist in Southampton, New York. "Using expired makeup can cause skin irritation and even breakouts." But swapping outdated products for new ones isn't just good for your skin: "Changing colors every season freshens up your complexion," says Joanna Schlip, a makeup artist for Physician's Formula. Follow these guidelines to give your makeup stash a clean sweep, then restock with essentials in new-for-spring hues.
