Linda Buchwald receives AAN's Presidential Award - News - American Academy of Neurology - Brief Article

Inside MS, Spring, 2002

Linda Buchwald, MD, a neurologist who specializes in multiple sclerosis, was one of two volunteer members of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) to receive the first President's Award at the 53rd annual meeting of the AAN in Philadelphia last year. The award recognizes unique contributions by AAN volunteers.

Dr. Buchwald lobbied the U.S. Congress as a member of the AAN's Legislative Affairs Committee for 12 years. In addition to being a voice for the neurological community, she has also worked to bring National Multiple Sclerosis Society volunteers to Capitol Hill. "I believe," she said, "that it is ethical, practical, and altogether appropriate that we advocate for and with our patients, and I hope to continue to do so.

"To me," Dr. Buchwald concluded, "this award is a promise that this work will continue with all the support and resources that the Academy can muster for it."

Dr. Buchwald is chief of Neurology at Mt. Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She has long been active as a volunteer with the National MS Society, frequently speaking at educational meetings and on Web casts, and she is a member of the Society's Medical Advisory Board.
