Government says modified corn safe for Monarch butterfly larvae - Brief Article

Nutrition Health Review, Winter, 2002

In September 2001, the National Academy of Sciences released a study examining two years' worth of data regarding the dangers of a certain type of genetically engineered corn that had been designed to resist some insects. It had been claimed that the new type of corn was harmful to the larvae of the Monarch butterfly.

The study, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Maryland Agricultural Technical Committee, and several Canadian agencies, showed that the most common modified corn products were not harmful to the larvae.

The results of the study are available to the public through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
