The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved for military use a liquid decontamination lotion designed to remove or neutralize chemical warfare agents and a fungal toxin from the skin.

Reactive Skin Decontamination Lotion (RSDL) is contained in a sponge pad and must be used as soon as possible after exposure to chemical agents to be beneficial. The lotion is meant to be a replacement for the standard M-291 skin decontamination kit available to military personnel, which removes toxins but does not neutralize them.

"[The] FDA worked with the U.S. Army to expedite review of this product to make it available to our men and women in uniform as quickly as possible," said FDA Commissioner Mark B. McClellan M.D., Ph.D.
