Raw fish and cancer - Medical News From Around The World - Brief Article

Nutrition Health Review, Summer, 2003

VIETNAM -- World Health Organization (WHO) scientists recently met in Hanoi, Vietnam, todiscuss different ways to prevent lung disease and liver cancer.

Raw fish consumption, which has soared in popularity because of sushi bars, was linked to adverse effects. According to WHO, nearly 40 million people are infected with worms and other parasites that are found in raw fish. The worms are passed from snails to fish to people, with the whole process repeating itself when human waste is disposed in waterways inhabited by sea life. These repeated infestations have been linked to pulmonary illnesses and hepatic cancer.
