Another cause of asthma implicated: house dust

Nutrition Health Review, Wntr, 1991

Charlottesville, Virginia: Many factors are recognized that may contribute to the development of asthma; among them are hereditary factors, pollution, psychological, emotional problems, and unusual weather sensitivity. Scientists in Great Britain and at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville suggest adding another agent: early childhood exposure to house dust mites. The study confirms many investigations that hinted at the link between asthma and this particular insect which thrives in house dust.

According to the scientists, keeping homes heated to high temperatures, using fitted carpets, tight insulation, and cold-water detergents create environments favorable for the growth of dust mites.
