How to Prevent Breast Cancer. - book reviews

Nutrition Health Review, Wntr, 1996

By Ross Pelton, R.Ph., Ph.D., C.C.N.; Taffy Clarke Pelton, M.A.; and Vinton C. Vint, M.D. Published by Simon & Schuster. Price: $13.00.

The rather lengthy subtitle of this book is "A Lifestyle Guide for the Prevention of Breast Cancer and Its Recurrence -- With an Investigation of the Critical Risk Factors." How to Prevent Breast Cancer is similarly comprehensive, providing clear and complete explanations and descriptions of the detection, treatment, and prevention of breast cancer.

Although a few things in the book seem a bit questionable -- such as its almost unqualified endorsement of melatonin, a substance on which the verdict from medical researchers is not yet in -- its explanation of mammography is excellent, and the instructions for breast self-examination are thorough and invaluable.

The authors also do a good job of informing the reader on both traditional and alternative approaches to the treatment of breast cancer and the state of the art on preventive nutrition.
