Congress, Considering Campaign Reform, May Mull TV Ads - Brief Article

Brandweek, March 19, 2001

WASHINOTON--As Congress takes up the debate on campaign finance reform this week, the issue of giving political candidates free television air time for their ads takes on added significance. The Alliance for Better Campaigns, a public advocacy group in Washington, released a report accusing broadcasters of "jacking up their ad rates" during the election last year, and contributing to the campaign finance problem.

The National Association of Broadcasters counters that free air time should not be mandated. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz, is expected to draft a free air time bill and introduce it later this session.
