Brandweek, Jan 1, 2001

Karen Benezra, executive editor of Brandweek magazine, has been promoted to editor, effective today.

Benezra succeeds Gerry Khermouch, who is leaving the magazine after nearly eight years to become an associate editor at Business Week. For the past year, Benezra has overseen news operations at Brandweek, having returned to the marketing weekly following a 16-month stint as national news editor at sister publication Adweek.

"Brandweek is now the definitive publication on brand marketing, and Karen inherits a topnotch reporting staff. Her enthusiasm and energy, matched with experience and insight, promises an even brighter future for the magazine said Sid Holt, editor-in-chief of Adweek Magazines, which includes Adweek, Brandweek, Mediaweek and MC.

"I am excited to build upon Brandweek's great history as we move ahead into a new phase of growth," said Benezra. "Gerry's talents and contributions will be missed' Her successor has not yet been named.

Benezra, a former business writer and marketing columnist at Gannett Suburban Newspapers (White Plains, N.Y.), joined Brandweek in February 1994 as a staff writer covering soft drinks, fast food, toys, licensing and entertainment. She was named an editor-at-large in 1996 and became national news editor at Adweek in June 1998.

Separately Brandweek has added two new staffers, Hilary Cassidy and Kenneth Hein, to senior editor posts. Cassidy who will cover sports marketing, previously worked as a marketing communications director at the National Basketball Association and most recently was editor-in-chief at Sporting Goods Business. Hein, who will report on soft drinks and interactive marketing topics, was senior editor at iMarketing News.
