ESPN Zone Ads Out to Launch - sports-themed eateries launch ad campaign - Brief Article

Brandweek, May 14, 2001 by Kenneth Hein

ESPN Zone unveils a new yearlong ad campaign next week in support of its growing chain of sports-themed eateries. The new tag, "A Taste of ESPN" adorns TV, radio, print and outdoor ads that trumpet the restaurant's unique attributes.

The effort, airing May 15, replaces the "Eat. Drink. Watch. Play" effort which had been intact since the chain's 1998 launch.

A radio spot, from Lowe, Lintas & Partners, San Francisco, has a narrator waxing poetic about what he'd do if he owned a restaurant, TV positions ESPN as a family restaurant using the sardonic sports wit that the cable channel has perfected. The spots will air on local ABC and cable affiliates, as well as on ESPN.

Print and outdoor ads show a family sitting in a booth situated on second base during an Atlanta Braves game. The text reads "Great Food. 150 Screens. Game Arena." Media buys will include Time Out, Where? and ESPN The Magazine. Outdoor will run in all six current ESPN Zone markets on bus shelters, billboards and trolleys

New restaurants are slated to open in Las Vegas in July and in Denver in December.
