Sony Suspends Two Execs for Overly Creative Advertising - trouble over fictitious film critic, David Manning - Brief Article

Brandweek, June 11, 2001

CULVER CITY, CALIF.--Two ad execs at Sony Pictures Entertainment have been reprimanded and suspended for 30 days without pay following Newsweek's revelation last week that studio ads for four recent films included review quotes from a non-existent critic. Svp-creative advertising Josh Goldstine and creative ad director Matthew Cramer reportedly were the two disciplined following confirmation that critic "David Manning" was fictitious and not affiliated with the Connecticut weekly Ridgefield Press, as Sony ads proclaimed.

The studio said in a statement that new checks and balances would be created "to prevent this from happening again."
