Why didn't the T-bird cross the road? Because gas prices are through the roof. In a Gallup survey nearly half of the population (48%) said soaring gas prices have affected their driving habits or vacation plans. Roughly one-third of Americans say the rise in gas prices has caused them financial hardship (36%).

Gas prices now average more than $1.60 per gallon and are surpassing $2 per gallon in some parts of the country. 50% of the public believes the price hike represents a permanent upward change, while 45% think it's temporary In contrast, only a third (34%) thought high prices were here to stay when asked in March.
