Repackaged La Escepcion Cigars Return After 20 Years

Brandweek, July 3, 2000

NEWYORK--Villazon partners with distributor JR Tobacco of America to relaunch a limited run of La Escepcion cigars. A new version of the Cuban-styled stogies returns after dying on shelves more than 20 years ago because the brand was packed in the "ugliest cigar box in the entire history of the industry," according to Lew Rothman,JR Cigar president who admits to designing that package.

Inspired by finding an 1840 engraving of the original brand, Rothman vowed to package the cigar, retailing at $4-6 each, in the most beautiful box ever. Future La Escepcion runs will be determined each season based on the harvest of Ecuadorian Sumatra wrappers. Advertising via catalog, POP supports.
