The Central Bank of Mexico filed lawsuits against Mexican banks Banamex, BBVA-Bancomer, Bital and Banorte

Latin Trade,  Sept, 2003

The Central Bank of Mexico filed lawsuits against Mexican banks Banamex, BBVA-Bancomer, Bital and Banorte. The Central Bank wants to force the institutions to turn over information on bad loans the government absorbed during the 1994 peso crisis. The monetary authority says it wants to ensure the validity of the loans transferred to the government's rescue-fund agency Fobaproa.

The banks say they are protected by an injunction against audits, which would be conducted by Mexico's Bank Savings Protection Institute (Institute Para el Ahorro Bancario).
