TYCO INTERNATIONAL, a U.S.-based telecommunications equipment company, landed a $900 million contract to develop an undersea fiber-optic cable for Spain's Telefonica. The cable will connect South America, Central America and the United States, and be fully installed by mid-2001. Telefonica also sold its undersea fiber optic cable installation and maintenance business, Telecommunicaciones Marinas, to Tyco.
The price: $280 million.
