Ford Gets Even

Ford Motor didn't get angry with Rio Grande do Sul Gov. Olivia Dutra, it got even. The world's second-largest automaker scrapped its planned plant in the southern Brazilian state after Dutra reneged on his pledge to give Ford $260 million in tax breaks and subsidized loans. Ford is now building a $1.3 billion auto factory in Bahia, a northeastern state in Brazil.

"[Bahia] offered us the best infrastructure conditions and an unmatched backing of our project," says former Ford do Brasil president Ivan Fonseca e Silva, who was recently named vice president of strategy and business operations for the automaker's South American operations.
