TRW Inc. has appointed Patrick P. Caruana (retired USAF Lieutenant General) vice president and program manager of the Space-Based Infrared System Low (SBIRS Low) program.
A TRW/Raytheon team was Tuesday awarded a $275 million, 38-month SBIRS Low Program Definition Risk Reduction (PDRR) contract.
Caruana will lead the TRW/Raytheon team during PDRR to define program requirements, perform ground demonstrations and complete conceptual designs for the SBIRS Low system. PDRR leads to competition for Engineering, Manufacturing and Development of the operational system, which will launch in 2006.
SBIRS Low is the low-Earth orbiting component of the nation's next-generation ballistic missile early-warning missile system.

Caruana joined TRW in November 1997 and served in various capacities for S&EG in Redondo Beach.
Prior to joining TRW, Caruana spent 36 years as a member of the Air Force. During his Air Force career, he served in a full range of leadership and staff positions and achieved the rank of Lieutenant General. In his last position, Caruana served as the vice commander of Air Force Space Command, Peterson Air Force Base, Colo.
Caruana is a command pilot, having flown more than 5,000 hours with 500 combat hours. As an air campaign planner and commander directing strategic forces in Saudi Arabia during the Persian Gulf War, his people operated 12 wings of tanker, bomber and battle management aircraft in six nations and the Indian Ocean area.
As the first commander of the 14th Air Force Command, he directed the Air Force's only space force that supports warfighting worldwide with ballistic missile warning, control of DoD and NATO satellites, spacelift generation and range operations, global space surveillance and warning and ballistic missile test operations.
TRW's Space & Electronics Group builds communications, scientific and defense spacecraft; produces, integrates and tests payloads; develops advanced space instruments and integrates experiments into spacecraft. It is an operating unit of TRW Inc., which provides advanced technology products and services for the global automotive, aerospace and information systems markets.
