Industry: Email Alert RSS FeedWorld Wide Wireless Communications Enters Final Stage Of Patent Process For VDMA Chip's 'Distributed Wireless Call Processing System' - Government Activity
Cambridge Telcom Report, August 9, 1999
World Wide Wireless Communications, Inc. Monday received confirmation from its patent attorney, Roy A. Eckstrand, that the final artwork detailing the architecture of the Company's Virtual Division Multiple Access (VDMA) chip has been filed with the U.S. Patent Office, the issuance fee has been paid, and that the issuance of the patent would be forthcoming as "a matter of course." Specifically, this patent will provide protection for the distributed wireless call processing system related to the VDMA chip set currently in development by the Company.

The Company's patent application -- originally filed under the name of Michael Lynch, the founder of the current Company's two privately owned predecessors -- was submitted in October 1996. Thereafter, Mr. Lynch assigned all patent rights to World Wide Wireless Communications. The patent is the culmination of years of research and development by Mr. Lynch and his companies and builds upon ongoing developments by World Wide Wireless' engineers. Over $4 million has been invested in the development of the chip set, to date.
The Company's VDMA transmission technology, to be implemented in the chip sets when completed, will embody very low power transmission along multiple routes between two mobile or stationary points on the network. As a result, a fabric of transmission paths is created, rather than the traditional hub and spoke transmission between central nodes and the multiple users of a traditional cellular system. The multiplicity of routes will generate an aggregate capacity for the network that far exceeds that of the traditional system where multiple transmission paths converge on a single hub, quickly consuming the available radio frequency in the cell. The Company's expectations for the VDMA technology includes the ability to establish wireless telephony networks without the requirement of transmission facilities apart from the chip set itself, thereby permitting the creation of such systems with very little infrastructural expense.
"Word that we are approaching final issuance of the VDMA patent for our distributed wireless call processing system will mean that our engineering team, headed by chief engineers Matthew Thompson and Dr. Paul Perryman, will soon commence final development of the chip set," noted Douglas P. Haffer, President and Chief Executive Officer of World Wide Wireless. "We anticipate an additional nine to twelve months of work will be required to finalize that development."
World Wide Wireless Communications, Inc. is positioning itself to become a global leader in the wireless telecommunications industry. Through its two core divisions -- Internet division and PCS division -- the Company acquires and develops proprietary technology, licenses and communications infrastructure with the primary objective of delivering "next generation" high-speed Internet access and digital cellular phone research. Its Internet division currently holds or controls FCC-licensed frequencies in 43 locations throughout the United States and its territories. The Company has announced its intent to acquire World Services International, the largest interconnect company in Puerto Rico, which will serve as the foundation on which to expand its international business operations. World Wide Wireless is also working to establish markets for its Virtual Division Multiple Access (VDMA) chip.
