Industry: Email Alert RSS FeedNational DSL - Digital Subscriber Line - Service Enhances Product Offerings From Omniplex Communications Group - Company Business and Marketing
Cambridge Telcom Report, Dec 6, 1999
Omniplex Communications Group (OCG), a subsidiary of Omniplex Communications Corporation (OCC) in St. Louis, Mo., is now offering Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) services to its customers for dedicated business Internet access in many major metropolitan areas across the country.
"DSL is the 'hottest' data product on the market today," says Richard P. Anthony, president of OCG. "It is a proven technology that provides fast Internet connections over standard (copper) telephone lines. It provides superior speed and performance at an economical cost but without complicated pricing constraints like the distance and usage charges associated with traditional T1 connections," Anthony continues.

The underlying DSL infrastructure for Omniplex's service is provided through Northpoint Communications, Inc. (San Francisco, Calif.), a national, facilities-based competitive local exchange carrier who currently operates DSL-based local networks in over 28 major markets nationwide. Northpoint Communications is one of the leaders in the "tier one" DSL marketplace.
DSL is ideal for typical business applications like Internet access and E-mail as well as advanced applications like intranets, extranets, virtual private networks (VPNs), file transfer, electronic commerce, Web hosting, and videoconferencing.
"Although there are many 'varieties' of DSL, Omniplex has chosen to offer SDSL (Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line) service, a higher quality service, which provides the same speeds (from 160 Kbps to 1.56 Mbps) for both uploading and downloading data," Anthony explains. "SDSL is a scalable, always-on connection which is the ideal Internet connection for businesses, where sending information can be just as important as receiving information," Anthony emphasizes.
Many vendors only offer ADSL (Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line) service, which may be acceptable for some users, such as the residential customers, but can have serious drawbacks for others, especially the business user.
The first cities where Omniplex will offer DSL service are Chicago, St. Louis, New York, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego. Other cities will follow.
Headquartered in St. Louis, Mo., Omniplex is a rapidly growing national Integrated Communications Provider (ICP). As an ICP, Omniplex offers a highly integrated bundle of communications services combined with state-of-the-art voice and data equipment to small and mid-sized businesses. Omniplex's integrated package of local, long distance, Internet, wireless and data communications services as well as complete communications systems planning, design, installation, maintenance and financing provides business customers with a comprehensive single source solution for all of their communication needs.
