U S WEST Deploys Pulsecom's WavePacer Wideband DSL Solution to Offer New High-Speed Data Service - Product Information

Cambridge Telcom Report, July 12, 1999

Pulsecom Wednesday announced that U S WEST has deployed Pulsecom's WavePacer Wideband DSL Solution as a platform for offering a new high-speed data service to business customers in its region.

U S WEST's 2-wire, 128 Kbps Frame Relay service is the first offering from a Regional Bell Operating Co. (RBOC) to utilize IDSL technology for frame relay services.

Using the WavePacer Wideband DSL Solution, U S WEST can now offer customers an economical solution for scaling their networks. The 2-wire, 128 Kbps Frame Relay service is ideal for businesses that need to boost the speed of their existing 56/64 Kbps frame relay networks, but whose future bandwidth needs are not expected to require full T1 service.

It also provides cost-effective Internet and remote LAN access for work-at-home users and telecommuters and for distance learning applications.

The WavePacer Wideband DSL Solution is a DSL platform that provides an efficient, cost-effective way to provide high-speed data access for a variety of business and consumer applications. The WavePacer Wideband DSL Solution includes a series of line interface cards that can be used to provide dedicated, high-speed frame relay access at speeds ranging from 56 Kbps to 1.544 Mbps.

Plugging one of the WavePacer Wideband DSL line cards into an existing D4 channel bank transforms a provider's embedded digital transmission equipment into a high-powered frame relay access concentrator. This eliminates the need for digital cross-connects and substantially reduces the number of frame relay switch ports required, allowing providers to quickly and inexpensively transition from traditional data services to superior frame relay-based services.

Specifically, U S WEST deployed the WavePacer IDSL-128 line cards to offer their new service. The fact that the line card could be easily integrated with U S WEST's existing infrastructure was a key factor in the RBOC's decision to select Pulsecom.

Commented Tom Wilson, director of Multiservice Network Solutions for U S WEST !NTERPRISE Networking: "We selected Pulsecom's WavePacer Wideband DSL Solution because it provided the functionality we require with a simple, plug-and-play deployment scheme. By plugging the WavePacer IDSL-128 line cards into our D4 channel banks, we can support up to four times as many subscribers as we could with a comparable leased line or ISDN-based solution without replacing our existing hardware."

Also critical to U S WEST's decision was the availability of Pulsecom's graphical, SNMP-based WavePacer Wideband Network Management System (NMS), which can manage all of the IDSL-128 line cards in U S WEST's network from a single, central point. According to Wilson, Pulsecom met the technical considerations, in addition to providing the best platform from a business perspective.

"We are pleased to be assisting U S WEST in the roll-out of these innovative services," said Sassan Babaie, vice president of marketing for Pulsecom. "By delivering a solution that saves providers like U S WEST the substantial cost of rebuilding their networks and, at the same time, reduces their time to market, Pulsecom is enabling these providers to offer their subscribers more cost-effective options for high-speed data services."
