NorthPoint Communications, one of the nation's fastest growing communications companies, Monday announced the appointment of four new members to its senior management team. These appointments add top-flight talent to one of the industry's strongest management teams and will enable NorthPoint to build on the leadership position it has established in meeting the enormous demand for broadband communications services.
Joining NorthPoint are: * Ruben D. Cota Jr. - vice president, service delivery and support
* Doug Garrett - vice president, local exchange carrier (LEC) relations
* Nancy J. Hemmenway - vice president, human resources and administration

Ruben Cota Jr. As vice president of service delivery and support, Ruben Cota will build on NorthPoint's commitment to maintaining the highest standards of customer service excellence as DSL service deployment and usage accelerates nationwide. Cota is focused on enhancing NorthPoint's service delivery and support methods for the company's growing number of network service provider partners and engineering the customer service organization for maximum scalability. Cota will report to Bob Flood, vice president of network operations.
Before joining NorthPoint, Cota served as chief operating officer of SBC Internet Services in San Francisco. With overall responsibility for the Internet experience of SBC's customers, Cota played a critical role in building the organization from the ground up, creating its customer support systems and processes. Prior to joining SBC, Cota spent several years with Pacific Bell in various service, systems, network operations and financial planning roles.
Nancy Hemmenway Nancy Hemmenway, who joins NorthPoint as vice president of human resources and administration, will help NorthPoint sustain its rapid growth by nurturing a unique company culture that attracts some of industry's best talent. In addition to her recruitment expertise, Hemmenway brings strong employee training and development skills that will be utilized in developing new programs for NorthPoint employees. Reporting directly to Fetter, Hemmenway will focus on fostering an environment that has enabled NorthPoint to remain agile and aggressive as it experiences rapid growth.
Hemmenway boasts over 21 years of experience in the communications industry. In her most recent position, Hemmenway served as vice president of human resources for PrimeCo Personal Communications. In her first year at PrimeCo, she managed the hiring of 2,600 new employees. Hemmenway also spent over ten years with Bell Atlantic Corporation where she took on a variety of HR, sales, regulatory and engineering roles.
Doug Garrett NorthPoint has appointed Doug Garrett as vice president of local exchange carrier (LEC) relations with the chief responsibility of overseeing NorthPoint's business relationships with incumbent local exchange carriers as the company continues its nationwide DSL network expansion. Garrett augments NorthPoint's considerable LEC relations strengths which have enabled it to quickly establish the nation's most expansive DSL network footprint. Garrett will report to Steve Gorosh, NorthPoint's vice president and general counsel.
Garrett joined NorthPoint from ICG Communications where he served as vice president of government and external affairs. Garrett also spent several years with Pacific Bell where he held positions in product management, wholesale market planning, finance and network operations. In his last position at Pacific Bell, Garrett was in charge of leading negotiations for interconnection contracts with more than 40 competing telecommunications companies.
Christopher Ungson As vice president of business development and implementation, Chris Ungson is responsible for shepherding the implementation of joint marketing and product development initiatives with NorthPoint's strategic partners, including companies such as Microsoft, Cable & Wireless, Frontier, Enron Communications, ICG and others. Ungson will also collaborate with NorthPoint's partners to identify and build new business opportunities. Ungson will report to Whitey Bluestein, NorthPoint's chief development officer.
Ungson brings valuable experience in working with companies in emerging markets to his position at NorthPoint. He worked at WorldCom, Inc. as vice president of network development where he was responsible for developing and implementing local service initiatives, including co-carrier agreements, number portability, local switch expansion and local high-speed Internet access. During his tenure at MFS Communications, Ungson negotiated and implemented the first co-carrier agreement in California. Ungson most recently served as "Entrepreneur in Residence" at Benchmark Capital.
