Cambridge Telcom Report, Oct 11, 1999
Lucent Technologies and CopperCom, a privately-held Silicon Valley company, Monday announced an OEM agreement under which Lucent will resell CopperCom's CopperComplete DSL family of products.
CopperCom's CopperComplete DSL product line includes the CopperCom MXR, an integrated access device for the customer premises, and the CopperCom Gateway, a voice gateway which is located between the DSL access concentrator or DSLAM (Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer) and a Class 5 Switch, such as Lucent's 5ESS Switch. These products will interoperate with Lucent's AnyMedia Access System, as well as the recently launched, next-generation Stinger DSL access concentrator, to create complete solutions for Voice over DSL applications.

The combined Lucent and CopperCom Voice over DSL solution is targeted toward incumbent local exchange carriers (ILECs) and competitive local exchange carriers (CLECs) worldwide.
The solution will be generally available in November for North America and internationally early next year.
"This OEM relationship enhances Lucent's already broad DSL portfolio," said David Heard, Lucent Technologies vice president for Access Solutions. "With CopperCom's industry-leading products, we can offer our customers end-to-end Voice over DSL functionality for circuit-based networks today, and we can cost-effectively migrate those customers' networks to packet in the future."
For customers with existing packet-based networks, Lucent announced Voice over DSL capabilities with the revolutionary PathStar Access Server -- in combination with DSLAMs and packet-based integrated access devices -- earlier this year.
"Lucent is a worldwide leader in delivering voice and data solutions to service providers," said Cynthia Ringo, CopperCom's president and CEO. "The combination of our best-of-breed products will help accelerate the Voice over DSL market, enabling ILECs, CLECs, small businesses and upscale residences to immediately reap the benefits and cost savings of Voice over DSL."
CopperCom's line of customer premise equipment and voice gateways has been tested and certified for interoperability with Lucent's DSL products under Lucent's "Wired for DSL" program.
Lucent Technologies designs, builds and delivers a wide range of public and private networks, communications systems and software, and business telephone systems and microelectronic components. Bell Laboratories is the research and development arm for the company.
