Teleglobe Announces Major Expansion of Global Colocation Services and Facilities - Company Business and Marketing

Cambridge Telcom Report, Oct 18, 1999

Teleglobe Communications Corporation, one of the world's largest global Internet backbone network providers, has announced a major expansion of its global Internet colocation services and facilities for Internet Content Providers (ICPs) and Internet Service Providers (ISPs).

Using this service, an ICP or ISP can house their servers in one or more of Teleglobe's Internet access nodes and receive a direct connection to Teleglobe's global Internet backbone network. This service provides end-users in over 100 countries with improved access to bandwidth-intensive Internet content applications such as multimedia, streaming video and e-commerce.

ICP and ISP customers currently colocate at Teleglobe's Internet access sites in London, Los Angeles, Manchester (U.K.), New York City, Palo Alto (U.S.), Toronto and Vancouver. The first expanded Teleglobe Data Center is scheduled to open at the company's New York City Internet access site in the first quarter of 2000.

The deployment of additional North American, Asian and European Data Centers is expected to follow shortly thereafter as Teleglobe continues the deployment of its GlobeSystem network expansion.

"Teleglobe has built a superbly-connected, high-capacity network providing Internet backbone connectivity to a customer base that serves over 15 per cent of the Internet," said Bob Collet, vice president and general manager, Internet and Data Services, Teleglobe Communications Corporation. "These companies have decided that Teleglobe can effectively deliver their content to millions of Internet users. And from Teleglobe's standpoint, the value of our service to ISP customers is certainly enhanced by the growing breadth and diversity of entertainment, news, sports, technology, consumer services and other content located directly on Teleglobe's Internet backbone network."

Key ICP customers currently colocated on Teleglobe's global Internet backbone network include Akamai, iBEAM Broadcasting, INTERVU Inc. (Nasdaq:ITVU), ITV.net, RealNetworks (Nasdaq:RNWK), and Tucows.com. ISP colocation customers include the China Education and Research Network (CERNET), the Malaysian Institute for Microelectronic Systems (MIMOS), NORDUnet, Rostelecom, Singapore Telecom, SURFnet, Telefonica (NYSE:TEF), Telecom Italia (NYSE:TI) and the United Kingdom's Education and Research Networking Association (UKERNA).

The new Teleglobe Data Centers will support all the elements necessary to ensure undisrupted, high availability of service to providers of streaming media, e-commerce, Web applications and Web hosting. On the facilities side, support includes onsite UPS, diesel generators, fire detection and suppression systems, and redundant air conditioning systems.

On the network side, Teleglobe Data Centers currently provide redundant Cisco GSR (gigaswitch router), load balancing and LAN connections. Access, security and link/router status are monitored by technical staff 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Teleglobe announced earlier this year that it would invest US$5 billion over the next five years to expand GlobeSystem, the world's first globally-integrated Internet, voice, data and video network. GlobeSystem will increase Teleglobe's currently installed network capacity by an estimated 200-fold.

Teleglobe Inc. (NYSE, TSE, ME:TGO) is a recognized leader in global telecommunications. Through its subsidiary Teleglobe Communications Corporation, the company develops and supplies global connectivity services to carriers, Internet service providers, business customers and content providers worldwide.

Through Excel Communication's proven marketing and distribution channels, Teleglobe also caters to an expanding international consumer customer base. According to TeleGeography, the company is the fourth-ranked long distance provider in the United States and, according to a recent KMI Corporation study, the third largest owner of undersea fiber optic cable systems.

Teleglobe has a 50% interest in ORBCOMM, the world's first commercial low-earth-orbit, satellite-based, data communications system. Additional information is available at www.teleglobe.com.
