GlobeSpan's Chipsets Enable Low-cost Voice Over DSL Services With Downloadable Software - Company Business and Marketing

Cambridge Telcom Report, Sept 13, 1999

GlobeSpan, Inc., a leading worldwide developer of programmable digital subscriber line (DSL) chipsets, Wednesday announced that its DSL chipsets incorporate built-in hardware and software programmability that support a wide range of Voice over DSL applications (VoDSL), including Voice over IP (VoIP) and Voice over ATM (VoATM). DSL equipment manufacturers who use GlobeSpan's highly programmable chipsets can quickly and easily integrate Voice over DSL capabilities into their products and enable their customers, the ILEC and CLEC service providers, to take advantage of this rapidly growing market. GlobeSpan's chipsets are being used to enable VoDSL in central office DSLAMs as well as in customer premise Integrated Access Devices (IADs).

With VoDSL applications, DSL services become more valuable than ever. Service providers can now supply value-added DSL services by offering businesses not only fast Internet and telecommuting access, but also simultaneous multiple voice conversations, saving businesses the cost of separate phone lines. GlobeSpan has applied its advanced system-level expertise to develop chipsets incorporating built-in hardware and full programmability to enable a wide range of Voice over DSL applications.

"Voice over DSL is emerging as an application that will propel widespread usage of DSL," said Peter Meade, senior telecom analyst with Cahners In-Stat Group and co-author of the recent report "Voice over DSL: The Killer App." "Before VoDSL, DSL was synonymous with high-speed data access. Now with VoDSL, several telephone circuits-as well as high speed data access-all can be provided on a single copper pair."

GlobeSpan's advanced chipsets supporting VoDSL are available today. They are currently being designed into leading-edge high-performance VoDSL systems, including central office equipment, IADs and other customer premises equipment.

GlobeSpan, Inc. is a leading worldwide developer of advanced digital subscriber line (DSL) integrated circuits, which enable high-speed data transmission over the existing network of copper wire telephone lines at rates over 100 times faster than today's commonly deployed 56 kilobit modem technologies. Both Cahners In-Stat and Dataquest, two highly respected market research organizations, have ranked GlobeSpan the number one company in DSL chipset shipments for 1998. During 1999, Cisco Systems, Inc., Intel Corporation and US West, Inc. all made equity investments in GlobeSpan.

GlobeSpan has leveraged six years of field experience in implementing DSL technology to successfully bring proven DSL chipset solutions to market. The company's core engineering team includes several individuals who were early developers of DSL technology at AT&T Bell Labs. GlobeSpan offers a broad suite of DSL solutions, including ADSL, RADSL, HDSL, HDSL2, SDSL and MSDSL chipsets. To date, the company has shipped more than one million DSL chipsets, representing a significant share of this emerging market, to a customer base of more than 100 DSL equipment manufacturers.

GlobeSpan, Inc. is based at 100 Schulz Drive, Red Bank, New Jersey 07701 and can be reached at 1-732-345-7500. The company's web site is www.globespan.net.
