GlobeSpan Doubles Existing SDSL Speeds to 4.6 Mbps; Software Upgrade Accelerates Capabilities in MTU/MDU Markets and VDSL - Product Announcement

Cambridge Telcom Report, April 17, 2000

With data rates more than twice the speed of existing symmetric solutions, GlobeSpan, Inc. is announcing PegasuSDSL. This breakthrough enables DSL equipment manufacturers to deliver symmetric DSL transmission at up to 4.6 megabits per second over a single pair of ordinary copper telephone wires. GlobeSpan's new software upgrade for its XDSL2 chipset also accelerates customer capabilities in the expanding Multi-Tenant Units (MTU) and Multi-Dwelling Units (MDU) markets, as well as demonstrating the company's capability to migrate its products and technology towards VDSL.

PegasuSDSL is uniquely suited for very high-speed applications in MTUs/MDUs, an expanding new market for DSL services, which includes office buildings, multi-family apartment buildings, and even hotels. Service providers situate DSLAMs within an MTU/MDU to provide connections to the individual office or dwelling units via the building's existing telephone wires. In addition, PegasuSDSL has applications for voice, data, and video, and it creates a signal-processing platform capable of speeds that will eventually meet emerging VDSL standards.

"Our customers can now achieve the advantages of higher speed and performance through software downloads to the chipset rather than by costly redesign of their circuit boards," said John O'Neill, GlobeSpan's Symmetric DSL Product Line Manager. "This is a continuation of a commitment to providing added value to our customers' current designs. 4.6Mbps is not an end point but simply another increment of speed enhancements planned on a common GlobeSpan symmetric platform."

Availability

GlobeSpan's XDSL2 chipset with PegasuSDSLTM is now available with detailed reference designs aimed at reducing customer development cost and speeding time-to-market.

GlobeSpan, Inc. is a leading provider of integrated circuit, software, and system designs for digital subscriber line (DSL) applications which enable high-speed data transmission over existing copper wire telephone lines at rates over 100 times faster than today's 56 Kilobit modems. Both Cahners-Instat and Dataquest have ranked GlobeSpan number one in DSL chipset shipments.

GlobeSpan leverages seven years of field experience implementing DSL technology to deliver high performance, cost effective DSL chipset and software solutions to DSL equipment manufacturers worldwide. The company's core engineering team includes individuals who were early developers of DSL technology at AT&T Bell Labs, in addition to experts in VLSI design, communications algorithms, IP routing and switching, ATM protocols, and Voice over DSL system software. These core competencies enable GlobeSpan to deliver complete DSL system solutions. GlobeSpan offers a broad suite of standards based integrated DSL chipset solutions for ADSL, SDSL, SHDSL, HDSL, and HDSL2 applications utilizing DMT, 2B1Q, PAM, and CAP line codes. To date, the company has shipped millions of DSL chipsets to a customer base of more than 100 DSL equipment manufacturers globally, representing a considerable share of this emerging market.
