Industry: Email Alert RSS FeedJupiter Intensifies Coverage of Wireless Internet Market; Internet Research and Advisory Firm Expands Research Offerings and Launches First Global Wireless Forum in Stockholm
Cambridge Telcom Report, April 17, 2000
Jupiter Communications Inc. (Nasdaq: JPTR), the worldwide authority on Internet commerce, Thursday announced that it is increasing the company's coverage of the wireless market, with the expansion of its Broadband and Wireless research service and the introduction of the Jupiter Global Wireless Forum. The forum is the company's first dedicated event to address the business opportunities of the global wireless market.
According to Jupiter executives, the new forum and enhanced research services will provide businesses with the analysis and expertise they need to determine their approach to the wireless Internet. Jupiter analysts will examine the implications of the wireless Internet for telecom and technology providers and interpret wireless strategies available for business leaders of major financial institutions, retail venues, media companies, advertisers, and consumer brands.

"Given our Internet focus, the way we cover this market is substantially different from others in the market," said Gene DeRose, chairman and CEO of Jupiter Communications. "With our analyst resources in all major centers of wireless activity--Scandinavia, Silicon Valley, New York City, and soon Tokyo--we are well positioned to keep our clients informed about this rapidly expanding market."
The Jupiter Global Wireless Forum will take place on September 25 and 26 in Stockholm. The two-day event will examine the place of mobile interactive devices, such as smartphones and PDAs, in bringing wireless Internet to a mass audience--and explore the value of deploying interactive commerce, content, and advertising on wireless platforms.
DeRose added, "We are very excited to host our first global wireless forum in one of the leading centers of wireless innovation. Our analysts will bring the insight that allows us to compare different industries, share best practices across industry lines, and examine how these industries are integrating the promise of wireless communications."
Jupiter analysts looked at issues surrounding the wireless Internet over the past few years, here is a sample of their findings:
-- Low-end smartphones to dominate in US: Jupiter expects that low-end smartphones, or wireless phone handsets that have a built-in browser for interacting with specialized online resources, will exceed 800,000 units in the hands of US consumers this year. The dominance of mobile phones will cement the wireless application protocol (WAP) as the delivery and content standards for mobile Internet access.
-- European players must exploit the SMS channel: The possibility of developing mobile Internet services using wireless application protocol (WAP) has generated much hype; however, only a few WAP terminals have reached consumers. Jupiter projects that the number of users of global system for mobile communications (GSM) in Europe with SMS-enabled phones will exceed 200 million by the end of this year. SMS is therefore the only mobile channel that gives companies access to a mass market currently. Thus far, only a few SMS marketing and commerce initiatives exist, and new players are entering an untried market.
