Cambridge Telcom Report, Jan 10, 2000
Intel Corporation announced Thursday at the Consumer Electronics Show a digital subscriber line (DSL) modem, based on two new industry standards, that allows access to the Internet at speeds up to 150 times faster than the fastest analog modems. The Intel PRO/DSL 3100 Modem marks Intel's first step to deliver standards-based broadband access technology aimed at providing residential and small business users faster access to the Internet.

The first product to be announced within the Intel PRO/DSL Modem family, the Intel PRO/DSL 3100 Modem connects to a personal computer (PC) through a USB port, simplifying installation by eliminating the need for a separate power cord or having to open the PC. The modem is also designed to be installed directly by the customer with no service call required from the telephone company. Since the Intel PRO/DSL Modem provides an "instantly available" service, users have continuous access to the Internet without needing to "dial up" to gain a connection. In addition, a user can make phone calls on the same phone line while connected to the Internet.
The Intel PRO/DSL Modem helps provide residential, home office and small office customers with a better Internet experience. The faster response time with Intel's PRO/DSL Modem means customers can spend less time waiting for information to be sent or received when engaging in activities such as shopping online, checking stock prices or participating in a videoconference.
"Consumers and small businesses need reliable and affordable technology to fully experience today's Internet economy," said Chad Taggard, business unit manager, Intel's Broadband Access Operation. "With the Intel PRO/DSL 3100 Modem, consumers can now explore the best the Internet has to offer, such as streaming video, interactive audio, home networking and Internet gaming."
According to Cahners In-Stat, an independent industry analyst firm, DSL subscribers worldwide are expected to reach two million in 2000.(a)
The Intel PRO/DSL 3100 Modem supports two worldwide ITU DSL standards, G.Lite and G.DMT. Based on these industry-accepted standards, the Intel modem helps reduce user cost and complexity of installing a DSL modem within the home or small office environment.
Pricing and Availability
The Intel PRO/DSL 3100 Modem will be available through select DSL service providers in February 2000, at a U.S. suggested list price of $295.00. P. Intel, the world's largest chip maker, is also a leading manufacturer of computer, networking and communications products. Additional information about Intel is available at www.intel.com/pressroom.
