Lucent Technologies Custom Wireless Paging System Extends Broader Reach, More Paging Options - Company Business and Marketing

Cambridge Telcom Report, Jan 31, 2000

Lucent Technologies Monday introduced Lucent Automated Paging Systems (APS), a family of programmable on-site wireless paging systems that works with almost any telephone system and allows users to have a variety of options for receiving pages.

APS offers businesses more capabilities to transmit messages to employees in areas where only overhead paging systems and frequent pages are inappropriate. They also allow staff to move freely about a facility, yet never miss a call. Because the systems are integrated with the on-premises telephone, they provide the advantages of wireless paging without the expense associated with monthly wide-area paging services. In addition, pages are sent instantly, so there is no waiting for wide area services to process a page.

The APS family gives users a choice of either receiving an overhead, numeric or alphanumeric page or combination of both. The systems also can link to a wide-area pager and voice mail. With a range of up to two miles, the systems cover large facilities and their immediate surroundings.

Other capabilities include: -- A paging option that allows callers to automatically place a page without needing to dial a separate pager or PIN number.

-- A paging feature that links the system to security or fire alarm systems and equipment so a page can go directly to an individual or group such as security staff to alert them of a break-in.

-- Programming capabilities of up to 30 alphanumeric messages unique to a business, such as a message that directs a car salesperson to return to the showroom. -- A "Park and Meet Me" feature that places a caller on hold automatically until the person who has been paged picks up the call. Once the paged person sees the feature's special code, he or she only has to dial the code and does not have to know the caller's phone number for an instant connection.

The Lucent APS 360 model can handle up to 360 users and the Lucent APS 120 model handles up to 120 users. The APS operates in the low band UHF radio frequency and the systems can connect to PBX systems such as Lucent's DEFINITY Enterprise Communications Server, DEFINITY ProLogix, MERLIN LEGEND Communications System or key systems such as Partner Advanced Communications System and analog ports, enabling access from any Touch-Tone telephone.

APS is available in the U.S., Canada, Caribbean, Central America and South America. The list price is $9,500 for a system with a mix of 20 numeric and alphanumeric pagers. For more information about APS, go to the web site at http://wwwdb.lucent.com/bcs/syst.main?p_id=88.
