Cambridge Telcom Report, Jan 31, 2000
Siemens' U.S. business units recorded high increases in both sales and orders for the first quarter of fiscal 2000 (10/1/99-12/31/99), driven by strong market demand.
Sales for the first quarter jumped 19 percent to $3.72 billion over the corresponding 1998 figure of $3.13 billion. Among the units showing particularly strong three-month sales over the same period last year was Infineon Technologies (with a 156 percent increase), which benefited from the rebound of the semiconductor market, as well as from the first-time consolidation of its White Oak production facilities.

Siemens ElectroCom (a supplier of postal automation systems) is up 144 percent, due primarily to successful project completions and revenues from new business. Siemens Westinghouse Power Corporation posted a 20 percent increase in sales, the result of continuing strong market growth.
Orders for Siemens' U.S. business units rose 25 percent to $4.27 billion for the first quarter over the first quarter 1998 figure of $3.42 billion.
Employment declined to 60,800 at the end of the first quarter 2000 compared with 64,200 for the same period last year, mainly due to the sale of Siemens Electromechanical Components, Vacuumschmelze Corporation, and Siemens Passive Electronic Devices, which altogether added 3,000 employees to last year's number.
