Cambridge Telcom Report, March 20, 2000
Lucent Technologies and Jetstream Communications Tuesday announced they have entered into an OEM agreement under which Lucent will resell and support Jetstream's broadband voice services platform, the CPX-1000 T, to create complete solutions for voice-over-digital subscriber line (VoDSL) applications. Under the terms of the agreement, Lucent will resell the Jetstream CPX-1000 as part of a complete voice-over-broadband offering for ATM and frame relay networks that includes Lucent's StingerT DSL Access Concentrator, DSL MAXT 20 and the AnyMediar Access System.

"Voice-over-DSL represents a tremendous opportunity for service providers," said Janet Davidson, president of the Lucent InterNetworking Systems' Access Networks division. "With Lucent's complete VoDSL solutions, including Jetstream's industry leading voice gateways, service providers can quickly and easily offer integrated voice and data services using DSL technology at minimal costs." DSL technology enables high-speed, dedicated access to voice and data services over ordinary copper telephone lines, meeting the growing demand for new broadband services without additional costly investment. VoDSL is the transport of digitized voice traffic over a DSL access line. The transport occurs in the high end of the DSL portion of the frequency band, which is separate from the band used for regular telephone service.
"Lucent is a powerful player in the broadband access market, and we are excited to play a key role in their broadband voice solutions offer," said Sundi Sundaresh, CEO of Jetstream. "Jetstream has worked to develop a product that meets the stringent reliability requirements of a service provider's network. The December 1999 NEBS3 certification of the CPX-1000, along with certification of our GR-303 protocol with the Lucent 5ESSr Switch, has helped us build a strong partnership for delivering world class broadband voice solutions with Lucent."
The CPX-1000 interoperates with Lucent's Stinger, DSL MAX 20, and AnyMedia Access System platforms to provide VoDSL. With the highest density and flexibility in the industry, Stinger, Lucent's next generation DSL access concentrator (DSLAM), delivers all flavors of DSL from a single platform. Stinger's Quality of Service (QoS) features enable service providers to prioritize voice services while delivering dedicated access to bandwidth-hungry data services at the same time.
DSL MAX 20 offers the benefits of a high-performance DSL access concentrator and integrated Layer-2/Layer-3 functionality in a single compact unit. It is ideal for campuses, small business complexes, apartment complexes, hotels and small central offices where relatively low-density DSL access services are required. With support from 8 to 32 SDSL ports, the DSL MAX 20 provides the port density that managers of multi-dwelling units, small carriers, and campuses need in a space saving design. The AnyMedia Access system is a highly scaleable, high-density, multiservice access vehicle designed to provide a number of services from any transport medium -- twisted pair, T1 line, fiber or wireless -- to any digital switch or data network through standard interfaces. The integrated system supports both narrowband and broadband services including regular telephone service and DSL. The AnyMedia uses plug-and- play application packs that allow the mix of telephony and DSL services to be changed at any time.
The new OEM agreement cements an existing relationship between the two companies. Jetstream was a founding member of the Lucent "Wired for DSL" interoperability program and a beta site for the Stinger product last fall. With this new partnership in place, Jetstream and Lucent have created a compelling voice and data product offering for CLEC, ILEC, and IXC customers.
Lucent Technologies, headquartered in Murray Hill, N.J., designs, builds and delivers a wide range of public and private networks, communications systems and software, data networking systems, business telephone systems and microelectronics components. Bell Labs is the research and development arm for the company. FMI: http://www.lucent.com.
