Startec Global Communications (Nasdaq: STGC), an integrated communications provider of voice, data and Internet services to ethnic consumers, Tuesday announced its fourth acquisition in under a month of an IP network. This most recent acquisition consists of five Internet Protocol gateways in Africa, Central Europe and Southeast Asia, increasing the total number of IP gateways in Startec's global VoIP network from 66 to 71, accessing over 30 countries. In addition to this acquisition, Startec's network interfaces with a vast number of VoIP gateways owned and operated by Startec's affiliate partners.

Startec is able to transmit phone-to-phone voice traffic using a combination of its private managed network and the public Internet. Through its Global Network Monitoring Center, Startec employs sophisticated routing technology to avoid congestion and delays inherent on parts of the public Internet to provide high-quality connectivity through its managed network into areas of the world that are often difficult to reach.
Startec owns and operates one of the largest IP networks to provide VoIP transmission across the emerging market economies in the Asia Pacific Rim, the Middle East and North Africa, Russia and Central Europe and Latin America.
"Startec believes that it has one of the largest and the most mature global VoIP networks in the world. We expect to significantly increase the network over the next several months and add innovative VoIP products over it," said Ram Mukunda, chief executive officer of Startec. "The recent series of IP gateway acquisitions underscores our strategy and commitment to deploying the best of breed VoIP networks into the emerging economies. We provide seamless connectivity for voice and data traffic on our IP network."
Startec's network consists of IP, ATM and circuit-switched technologies to provide connectivity to the emerging economies, both over a managed network and over the Internet. Startec's network uses Lucent's SoftSwitch technology and currently supports Clarent and Cisco gateways at the edge. Command centers utilizing SS7 signaling are located in the U.S., Europe and Guam. Startec utilizes state of the art technology in providing 24 x 7 monitoring through its Global Network Monitoring Center utilizing among others HP Open View and Team Telecom International's Netrack software as tools for monitoring the network.
Startec is leveraging its leadership position into the emerging economies and its considerable arsenal of operating agreements with PTT's, second network operators and ISP's to create global alliances and partnerships for VOIP.
