The initial order from systems integrator Andrew is for approximately $700,000 for Hybrid head-end broadband wireless data products for the Buenos Aires site. This is the first step in an expected rollout of fixed broadband wireless installations in eight cities in Argentina. In addition, Andrew is the exclusive worldwide systems integrator for World Wide Wireless at future fixed broadband wireless sites elsewhere in Latin America and in other parts of the world, including Asia.
The World Wide Wireless project in Argentina is being launched with an initial high-speed MMDS wireless broadband Internet site in Buenos Aires. Hybrid modem and router products will be part of a fully integrated broadband fixed wireless network solution from Andrew that includes system engineering, installation, customer support, and equipment including sector antennas, frequency converters, subscriber antennas, subscriber premise RF equipment, transmitters, network switching and routing hardware, network management, and other Andrew products. World Wide Wireless has licensed the spectrum frequencies and has contracted to manage and deliver the system to the city of Buenos Aires and throughout Argentina.
Transmissions from the World Wide Wireless tower site on the outskirts of Buenos Aires are expected to begin by the end of April 2000, providing service over the greater Buenos Aires metropolitan area, with a population of more than 15 million people. The services offered in Argentina will be cellular two-way wireless systems that provide customers with high-speed broadband access to the Internet and other networked data services. The subscription service will be offered to business, governmental, educational and residential users.
"This World Wide Wireless project in Buenos Aires represents the first of what we expect to be many opportunities we have to partner with Hybrid in making 'last mile' Internet access connections available today for millions of users around the world," Jim Yard, Andrew VP broadband wireless systems group, said. "The initial system in Buenos Aires is an ideal place to adapt the scaleable and modular architecture of Hybrid products to a fixed wireless data system for a city or region that must be able to grow with customer needs."
"This is an important new thrust for Hybrid's role in the development of strategic international broadband wireless markets," Greenbaum said. "These markets, in Latin America and elsewhere, have huge fixed broadband wireless data needs and opportunities, due primarily to underdeveloped telecommunications infrastructures and large populations and land areas. Our Hybrid technology is proven, reliable and state-of-the-art for data network stations in such markets and we are enthusiastic about the prospects of partnering with Andrew in developing this kind of global business."
On March 15, 2000, Hybrid and Andrew announced an agreement in which products of both companies are integrated by Andrew to provide turnkey solutions for broadband fixed wireless operators around the world.
