Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) Monday named Bill O'Shea as executive vice president of Corporate Strategy and Business Development, a newly created position.
In his new role, O'Shea will focus on Lucent's core business opportunities in communications networking, Internet infrastructure, professional network design and consulting services and Web-based enterprise solutions linking private and public networks through the development of industry partnerships, internal development, broad technology platforms and strategic acquisitions. He will report to Lucent Technologies Chairman and CEO Richard McGinn.

O'Shea, 53, was president of Lucent's Enterprise Networks group, a part of which is being spun off to shareowners as announced on March 1.
"Bill's efforts over the last four years have helped Lucent make critical strides in both data networking and enterprise communications," said Rich McGinn. "He has played a key role in engineering acquisitions such as Ascend, Yurie and Quadritek, as well as developing alliances with companies like Sun Microsystems. Bill's experience will help us in our plans to forge future enterprise solutions linking private and public networks and in further developing industry partnerships."
O'Shea began his career with Bell Laboratories in 1972 and spent more than 20 years in the development, manufacturing, marketing and sales of information systems including AT&T's UNIX system in the 1980s and AT&T's advanced business systems products in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He was senior vice-president of NCR's Network Products Group and Worldwide Marketing for the computer business before coming to Lucent Technologies in 1995.
O'Shea received a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from Lowell (Mass.) Technological Institute and a master's degree in Electrical Engineering from Northeastern University. He also studied Information Systems at the University of Pennsylvania and is a graduate of MIT's Sloan School.
Born in Peabody, Mass., O'Shea now lives in Basking Ridge, N.J.
