Lucent Technologies Enhances AnyMedia Access System DSL Capabilities for Asia Pacific Markets - Product Announcement

Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) Monday announced enhancements to its AnyMedia Access System digital subscriber line (DSL) capabilities that will enable service providers in the Asia Pacific region to bring additional high-speed Internet, data and voice services to their customers. The new capabilities will allow network operators to rapidly deploy economical voice and DSL services to business and residential customers throughout the region.

The enhancements to the AnyMedia Access System, an integrated access platform, will be demonstrated at Korea Expo Comm Korea 2000 in Seoul, South Korea, from May 25 to 28, 2000, booth 230, and at CommunicAsia 2000 in Singapore, Hall 5, 5E 1-01, from June 6 to 9, 2000.

"Our AnyMedia platform is selling well worldwide because it allows service providers to offer regular telephone service and high-speed DSL from one device. Monday's enhancements to the AnyMedia family, reinforce Lucent's commitment to provide leading-edge data and communications technologies to service providers in Asia."

The enhancements to the AnyMedia portfolio include: - Higher Density ADSL Solutions - deliver high-speed Internet access via ADSL (asymmetric DSL) technology over existing telephone and ISDN lines. New cards include an 8-port ADSL card that is available immediately and a 16-port ADSL card that will be available by the end of 2000. The AnyMedia ADSL solution supports integrated splitters, eliminating extra rack space and cabling from bulky splitter shelves. The system can be deployed almost anywhere: in a street cabinet, inside office buildings or in a local exchange.

- High Density SDSL Solutions -- deliver high-speed, integrated SDSL (symmetric DSL) services at speeds up to 2.3MB over existing single pair copper wiring. SDSL is a rate adaptive technology: it determines automatically the highest data rate possible for a given line, based on the line's quality. Network operators do not have to manually provision the line as with traditional technologies. SDSL can reach customers as far away as 6.4kms. With the new 16 port SDSL card, operators can offer more affordable data services to business customers than traditional Nx64k and E1 lines. SDSL enables e-commerce for small and medium enterprises.

Its applications range from Internet and intranet access, video conferencing to remote LAN and Voice over DSL (VoDSL).

- Unique SHDSL Solutions -- allows network operators to economically and efficiently offer leased line services, ISDN PRA to business customers using existing copper loops. Available in September, the new 8-port AnyMedia SHDSL (Single pair high bit-rate DSL) card allows operators to provide symmetric, high-speed data transfer rates over single copper pairs. SHDSL is a multi-rate DSL technology with data rates varying from a low 192KB to a maximum of 2.32MB. SHDSL allows operators to reach distant customers at slower data rates. SHDSL does not interfere with the performance of ADSL services that are deployed in the same cable binder. The SHDSL AnyMedia solution provides Nx64k to E1 data extensions and ISDN PRA over the V3/V2M interface and the V5.2 dial-up interface, to support extensions to any remote PABX.

- Industry leading Quality of Service (QoS) - allows operators to establish Service Level Agreements (SLA) with their customers. The AnyMedia System's QoS allows service providers to offer multiple differentiated services including VoDSL (or "derived voice"), data and video services.

- AnyMedia Optical Network Unit (ONU) -- a quick, cost-effective way for service providers to offer high-speed Internet access, data, voice services, and ultimately video to customers. The new outdoor ONU pushes fibre closer to the customer, allowing network operators to economically offer broadband services. The compact ONU supports up to 128 xDSL ports, including ADSL, SDSL and SHDSL.

It offers an integrated MDF (main distributing frame) to speed up wiring of customers. The ONU can be easily mounted on telephone poles, on wall or on a pedestal. The unit is hardened to survive very hot tropical and desert climates.

The AnyMedia System is ideally suited for new operators and for those incumbents who are looking at extending and/or replacing their access network. A highly scaleable, high-density, multiservice access vehicle, the AnyMedia Access System is designed to provide a multitude of services from any transport medium -- E-1 line, fiber or wireless -- to any V5.2 digital switch and/or data network through standard interfaces. The integrated system supports both narrowband and broadband services -- voice, special services, payphone, ISDN and DSL -- and can be enhanced by changing out one card to include IP or ATM interfaces for delivering packet-based services.

The AnyMedia family uses "plug and play" application packs, enabling service providers to add broadband services such as ADSL or SDSL as market demand dictates.
