Cambridge Telcom Report, May 8, 2000
KSI Inc., an industry leader in commercial wireless location technology, recently received a new patent that introduces significant advancements in its wireless location technology.
The patent, entitled Robust, Efficient, Localization System (U.S. Patent No. 6,047,192), describes the use of signal correlation processing methods that will provide for more effective location measurements in environments where noise and interference may present difficulties. It also addresses optimizing signal processing and enhancing a location system's cost effectiveness. This technology can be applied to location solutions utilizing Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) and Angle of Arrival (AOA) methods for locating cellular and PCS phones and other wireless devices.

"KSI is pleased to have been granted this new patent that augments our portfolio of intellectual property," said Cynthia White, President and Chief Operating Officer of KSI Inc. "We expect this technological advancement to be a key ingredient in the deployment of efficient and accurate network based location systems which will be essential in the introduction of exciting new public safety and location enabled commercial internet services."
KSI's fundamental location-determination technology, with its innovative application of angle-of-arrival techniques, is already broadly protected by a United States patent granted in 1988. This pioneer patent covers determining a communications transmitter's location using the bearing-related, or angle-of- arrival, information derived from transmitted radio emissions received at multiple stations. Another KSI United States patent, granted in 1999, covers determining a wireless telephone's location based on the characteristics of the signal emissions received at a single station, used in combination with collateral, location-sensitive information about the signal or its environment. In addition to this recent patent protection of additional innovative aspects of KSI's location determination technology, the company has significant copyright and trade-secret rights that protect its proprietary signal processing and localization-and-tracking algorithms and software.
As announced in February, TruePosition, Inc., headquartered in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, recently signed an agreement in principle to acquire KSI Inc. in a stock acquisition of the company, which is anticipated to close by the end of May, 2000. Integrating both companies' proprietary technologies will position TruePosition as the premiere provider of wireless location technology and services.
KSI Inc. is based in Annandale, Virginia, and Wallingford, Connecticut. Established in 1986, KSI has become an industry leader in developing and deploying wireless network based commercial location systems to serve the emerging public safety, personal security, fleet management and intelligent transportation markets. The company has both patented and patent pending technologies used in its TeleSentinel system. FMI: www.ksix.com.
