China completes world's highest railroad tunnel - Industry Today - Brief Article

Railway Track and Structures, Dec, 2002

On October 19, the highest tunnel on the new railway being constructed to Tibet from Qinghai Province in China was bored through.

The 4,390-foot tunnel, called the Fenghuoshan Tunnel, is at an elevation of 16,092 feet and in permafrost soil conditions. The highest point on this line (not in the tunnel) will be at an elevation of 16,640 feet. The line, which, when completed, will be the highest railway that ever existed, is expected to open throughout its 710-mile length in 2007.

A special class of diesel locomotives to operate at this high altitude, Class DF8CJ, has been developed. The first of the class was placed in service November 15, and will be available for construction trains. (Submitted by Lou Cerny)
