Houston breaks ground for METRORail light rail - Brief Article
Railway Track and Structures, Feb, 2001
A project 20 years in the making became a reality January 25 when officials broke ground for METRORaiL, the Houston region's first light-rail system.
The $300-million project will be built with local funds and will not require the sale of bonds or a tax increase. The 7.5-mile line stretching from Houston's downtown employment centers to the Reliant Park complex is expected to generate $500 million to $1 billion in economic development along its route. The 16 stations will incorporate the creativity of local artists to reflect the neighborhoods they serve.
