San Francisco Muni plans light rail extension - Industry Today - Municipal Transportation Agency of the City and County of San Francisco - Brief Article

Railway Track and Structures, April, 2003

The Municipal Transportation Agency of the City and County of San Francisco awarded a contract to the joint venture of Parsons Brinckerhoff and PGH Wong Engineering to design an extension of the Muni Metro Third Street light rail transit line.

The new Central Subway extension, which is the second phase of the Third Street LRT extension, involves a five-station, 1.7-mile tunnel alignment through downtown San Francisco. The LRT line will run from Third Street and King Street near the new baseball park to Chinatown. Project elements include 1.7 miles of tunnels, four underground stations and one surface station.

Conceptual and preliminary design are scheduled for completion in 2005, with construction starting shortly thereafter. Major portions of the first phase of the extension are under construction and slated for completion in 2005.
