NS boosts capacity at Enola Yard in Pa - Industry Today - Norfolk Southern Corp - Brief Article

Railway Track and Structures, June, 2001

Norfolk Southern plans to quadruple the switching capacity of Enola Yard near Harrisburg, Pa., which will enable NS to streamline routings between certain destinations while enhancing the quality of service. Work is scheduled to be completed this month.

"This project symbolizes Norfolk Southern's aggressive pursuit of freight business moving between the Northeast and the South and further solidifies Harrisburg's position as a major freight hub for the Mid-Atlantic states," said David Brown, general manager of the railroad's Northern Region.

The $1.9-million project involves rehabilitating nearly 28 miles of track and replacing 1 miles of crossties. Upon completion, the yard will be able to process 600 cars per day, up from 125, and 15 new jobs will be created.

Also, NS has launched an Internet system that give customers the ability to electronically create bills of lading for new shipments. The bill-of-lading application is the first in the rail industry to give the customer an estimated rate immediately upon requesting a shipment.
