MTDB awards $82-million trolley extension contract - Industry Today - San Diego, CA, Metropolitan Transit Development Board - Brief Article

Railway Track and Structures, June, 2001

The Metropolitan Transit Development Board awarded the largest construction contract for the Mission Valley East trolley extension--building San Diego Trolley's first tunnel and underground station--to Clark Construction Group of Irvine, Calif. Clark's bid is approximately $82.7 million, below MTDB's own $84.3-million estimate. The board also approved a $4.135-million contingency fund. Work is scheduled to begin this month.

The 5.9-mile, $431-million Mission Valley East extension will connect the Trolley's existing Blue Line in Mission Valley, which currently stops at the Mission San Diego station just east of Interstate 15, with the Trolley's Orange Line at the Grossmont Center station in La Mesa, completing a ring of trolley lines around the San Diego area. The entire project is set for completion in 2004.

Clark's scope of work includes building a 4,000-foot tunnel that will loop under the heart of the San Diego State University campus, as well as constructing an underground trolley station.
