UP opens HQ building, breaks ground for Dallas IM facility
Railway Track and Structures, July, 2004
In June, Dick Davidson, UP ceo, officially opened Union Pacific Center, the railroad's new headquarters building in downtown Omaha, Neb.
Also in June, Union Pacific and Texas officials broke ground to celebrate construction of the railroad's new Dallas Intermodal Terminal just west of Interstate 45.
The 19-story Union Pacific Center can accommodate 4,100 employees, and allows Union Pacific to consolidate employees working in multiple locations throughout Omaha. The 1.3-million-square-foot building features a 19-story atrium, allowing every floor to receive maximum natural light, and one of the nation's largest video screens, measuring 37 feet wide by 16 feet tall.
The building also contains a training center, a 600-seat dining room, a credit union, a fitness/wellness facility, a salon and The Shop at Union Pacific Center, which will offer railroad apparel and related merchandise.
The project team for the $260-million facility included Gensler, design architect for both the base building and the interiors; Hines, development manager; Kendall/Heaton Associates, production architect; Walter P. Moore and Associates, structural engineer; and Alvine and Associates, MEP engineer.
The Dallas Intermodal Terminal is located jointly in the cities of Hutchins and Wilmer, about 15 miles southeast of downtown Dallas, on UP's main line between Dallas and Houston.
The facility will be constructed in phases. Construction of rail lines, cranes, buildings and truck parking is scheduled to be completed in June 2005. Additional construction phases will be based on customer requirements.
The new intermodal facility is located in an industrial park developed by Prime Rail Interest, Inc., which has also developed Railhead Phase IV in Ft. Worth. Other rail-served industrial parks being developed by Prime Rail Interest include Dallas Southport Center and Bonnieview Industrial Park in Dallas.
