Wheel profile measurement

Railway Track and Structures, July, 2004

Beena Vision Systems, Inc., offers an automatic wheel profile measurement system, Beena WheelView[R], that can be installed on any track position to measure all important wheel parameters, including flange thickness, flange height, tread hollow, rim thickness and some optional parameters, such as wheel profile plot and wheel diameter. The system operates at normal track speeds of up to 65 mph. It is available in two configurations of low speed (below 30 mph) and high speed (between 30 and 65 mph). The system can be installed at almost any track position with almost no track modification, according to the manufacturer. There is an integrated AEI reader to identify each individual wheel and record it in the corresponding database. A powerful processing unit computes the parameters for each wheel in real-time and reports condemnable wheels to the operator. Operation and maintenance can be remotely monitored.
