Canadian government clears CN, WC merger - Industry today - Canadian National merger with Wisconsin Central Transportation Corp - Brief Article

Railway Track and Structures, August, 2001

The government of Canada's Competition Bureau has completed its review and cleared Canadian National's proposed merger with Wisconsin Central Transportation Corp.

In the U.S., the Surface Transportation Board continues to review the proposed merger. The STB, which is treating the transaction as a minor one for regulatory review purposes, has established a schedule anticipating a final agency decision in the proceeding by September 7, 2001, if no environmental assessment is required and there is no oral argument.

Also, CN opened a $6-million (C) steel transfer center at Hamilton, Ont., Canada. The railroad notes the transfer center positions CN to capture a greater share of the transportation market for sheet steel in North America and will help reduce heavy truck traffic.

The 48,000-square-foot center near the railroad's mainline will accommodate the transfer, warehousing and cross-docking of coiled sheet steels.
