Going Beyond the Headlines: The Real Cost Drivers in Workers' Compensation
Tom Leamon, VP of Liberty Mutual Insurance Group & Director of Liberty Mutual's Research Institute for Safety, Hopkinton, Mass.
Thursday, Nov. 18:4-5 p.m.
Want to see a dramatic drop in your company's workers' comp losses? "Follow the numbers, not the newspaper," says Mr. Leamon, director of Liberty Mutual's Research Institute for Safety. Now in its 50th year, the Institute investigates the real causes of job-related accidents, injuries and disability. The results may surprise you. It's not newsy or trendy topics like carpal tunnel syndrome or "funny" chemicals that account for the vast majority of workers' comp losses. Overexertion, slips-trips-and-falls, and running into something are the major contributors to workers' comp costs. What can you do? Find out how the Institute has helped businesses and governments throughout the world, and what you can do to prevent the majority of your losses. Through slides and film clips, Mr. Leamon will show you typical hazards that cause hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical costs and lost workdays each year and steps you can take in your own company.
KEYNOTE Targeting Claimants for Failure: How Bullying in the Workplace Creates Workers' Compensation Claims and Delays Recovery in Existing Claims
Richard Pimentel, Senior Partner, Milt Wright & Associates, Granada Hills, Calif.
Friday, Nov. 19: 9-10:15 a.m.
Many employers believe that bullies are simply supervisors who use gruff "in your face" tactics to increase production. This is not true. The bully targets a specific employee and, by using a never-ending series of small, sometimes even trivial incidents and abuses orchestrates that employee's failure. Some targets of these bullies choose workers' compensation as their way out of an organization. While the exact number of these cases is not documented, there is no doubt that a negative and hostile employer atmosphere drives up the duration and cost of workers' comp claims. Mr. Pimentel will highlight these cases, discuss the real physical manifestations of stress caused by bullying, and offer guidance to deal with these situations. Bullying in the workplace happens four times more frequently than illegal discriminatory harassment, yet less than 10 percent of companies have a policy to address it. Find out how to identify these workers' comp claims and what you can do about them.
