Ann Deering

Risk & Insurance, March, 2005

Contributing editor Ann Deering died late last year after a long illness.

Ann's writing career came to her later in life, after she spent a career developing space and satellite underwriting products and policies at the broker Johnson & Higgins, later part of Marsh and McLennan.

Last year Ann wrote the cover story on the risk culture that hindered the recovery of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration from the Columbia disaster. She also wrote on recent developments in product liability protection.

For many years prior to writing for Risk & Insurance[R], she wrote for Risk Management magazine.

Ann valiently fought her illness, breast cancer, for more than a decade, opting to take part in pioneering clinical trials.

She began her career in claims as an insurance adjuster for Sears, Roebuck & Co.

Her experience in evaluating space risks dates back to the Mercury and Apollo programs, hence her expertise in space vehicle underwriting. That led to her cover story.
