Awards set benchmark for business
Business Asia, May 31, 1999
The Business Asia News Magazine Awards continue to raise the bar for companies dealing in the Asia-Pacific region.
Now in their sixth year, the awards have come a long way since Business Asia publisher Mr Peter Charlton first floated the concept in 1993 as a way of recognising and rewarding Australian and Asian businesses.
Today, the awards night takes its place as one of the leading events on the Australia-Asia business calendar and serves as an inspiration for business people in the region to become the best in their respective fields.
This year's awards winners join an impressive list of past recipients.
Previous winners include BHP Petroleum, Qantas, AWA, the Western Australian Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Toyota, ANZ, Austal Ships, Ansett, Moldflow, Hyundai, the Australian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, Citic Australia, Meinhardt International, Pulse Logistics Systems, NT Expo, Insearch Language Centre, Email, Cochlear and Mitsui.
The awards have also attracted the patronage of Australia's leading business figures and high-level Asian visitors, with guests in the past including Mr Chuan Leekpai, the current Prime Minister of Thailand; Mr Alexander Downer, Australia's Foreign Minister; Mr Bob Hawke, former Australian Prime Minister and one of the founders of the Asia Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) forum; high-profile Hong Kong businessman Mr T.T. Tsui; and Dr Noordin Sopiee, chief executive of Malaysia's Institute of Strategic and International Studies.
