British Airways' surprise move to scrap flights to Kuala Lumpur after 50 years may set back Malaysia's plan to emerge as a major regional air hub. The flights will be scrapped from the end of March 2001 and the move marks the latest in a spate of pullouts by big foreign investors from Malaysia over various reasons.
"It's bad news for KLIA for losing one of the world's top three airlines," said an industry executive in Kuala Lumpur. Already, several big names such as German carrier Lufthansa have ceased flying to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) over the past year.
